How It Started
Shockingly, there's NO single national standard for sex ed in The United States. So, what does that actually mean? It means that what your son is learning depends on where he lives. Now, most schools do an incredible job with the basics. But in others, social and political forces keep life-changing topics out of the mix completely.
Some kids are NOT required to learn about porn, or sexting, or assault. And some kids do NOT know the updated version of consent. So, in far, FAR too many cases, kids end up in real-world situations before they have any idea of what's actually going on. That's insane. It's wrong. And it's a recipe for disaster.
So, this course is for parents who wanna fill those gaps, take charge of their son's future, and build a safer, brighter world, for their son, and for the people around them. It's expert approved. It's completely online. And it's way, WAY cheaper than your son having a son. Sign up for Comedy Sex Ed today.
Why Comedy?
Every parent needs to have "The Talk." But no one knows what they're doing. So, they put a book on their son's nightstand... annnnnd he throws it into a river.
So, our goal is to take that same expert-approved information, and make it just a little more approachable. Now, will he like this course? No. Absolutely not, hahhahha.
Your son won't like ANY mandatory course on a Saturday. But it's not about "liking." It's about learning. And the beta results? Even better than we expected.
So, if you know a better way to reach your son, by all means, do that. But every kid who finished the beta said they liked THIS more than a traditional, academic format.
Maybe it's worth a shot.
Sources
This course uses information from trusted, publicly-available sources, like The CDC, The Department of Health and Human Services, and The National Institutes of Health. The information was synthesized by a copywriter. And that synthesis was reviewed and approved by a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) with a Master of Public Health (MPH.)
Scope
The scope of this course was informed by The NSES (The National Sex Education Standards.) But please note, The NSES is not a national mandate, there is no national mandate, and local requirements may vary.
Further, the NSES describes a longer-arcing educational journey unfolding over 12 years. This course unfolds over several hours. No course — including this one — could possibly map directly to The NSES.
So, think of this as an intro course. The sort of depth you'd expect from a 3-hour crash course. And think of The NSES as more of a “guiding light.” See the home page for more about the 12 lessons covered.
Writer
This course was written by an L.A.-based creative named Nick Taravella. Nick has been a writer for over a decade, a comic for over a decade, and a teenage boy for (almost) a decade, back when he was 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19 years old.
His experience lies in the ability to synthesize complex information and make it feel more approachable. That synthesis, in the case of this course, was approved by a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) with a Master of Public Health (MPH.)
Approval Statement
Summary of Review
Comedy Sex Ed has been comprehensively reviewed by a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) holding a Master of Public Health (MPH). While there is no single federal mandate for sex ed in The United States, this course follows widely-accepted best practices for boys’ sex ed, and communicates the big-picture elements of a foundational sex ed program.
Scope of Review and Evidence Base
The core guidance is derived from reputable public health authorities, including The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). While some details are simplified, or intentionally left out to keep the material clear and engaging, the reviewer confirms the critical pillars of boys’ sex ed are present and accurate.
Pedagogical Approach
Comedy and tone, in the case of this course, serve as deliberate instructional tools to increase accessibility for the target age group. Research supports the use of engagement-based learning strategies; however, the final determination of whether comedy, and a casual communication style, are appropriate for their child, remains at the sole discretion of the parent or guardian. The creative and comedic choices were outside the scope of this review.
Final Determination
Having reviewed this curriculum for accuracy, clarity, and adherence to public health standards, I hereby approve “Comedy Sex Ed” as a foundational sex ed program for boys and young men, ages 12 – 15. (This course is for educational purposes only and is not medical or legal advice.)
